How Long Should You Cook T-Bone Steak In Oven At 400?

I usually cook T-bone steak in the oven for 9-10 minutes for rare, 13-16 minutes for medium, and 20-24 minutes for well done at 400 degrees. Steaks without searing need a longer time to cook in the oven.

If you like to sear the steak first, you need 5 minutes of cooking time in the oven. I usually cook the steak for 7-9 minutes at 400°F for medium rare.

Let your steak cook in the oven for 10-12 minutes if you like it medium done, and 13-15 minutes for well-done.

The thickness is another factor to consider for your cooking time. The thickness of your steak can be 1 to 2 inches.

The T-bone steak is two cuts of steaks separated by a T-shaped bone. It’s made up of a piece of the strip and a tenderloin. [1] It might be challenging to cook since each cut may cook differently.

However, it is still possible to completely cook the t-bone steak with your desired doneness.

Rare

Sear your steak in a cast iron pan for 2 minutes per side. Then, leave it in the oven for 5 minutes; if you like your steak rare, cook it at 400°F.

While this level of doneness is not typically ordered in steakhouses, a rare steak has a unique flavor.

Medium Rare

If you like a medium rare steak, cooking it at 400°F for 7-9 minutes is best. The thickness of your steak can be 1 to 2 inches. Add 2-3 minutes for 1/2 additional thickness.

A medium-rare steak has a warm red center that is juicy. One sign that your steak has reached this level of doneness is when the beef’s internal temperature has reached 130°F- 135°F. [2]

Medium Well

Cook the T-bone steak for 10-12 minutes if you want your steak medium done. At this point, your T-bone steak is juicy and moist.

The internal temperature should reach 140°F-150°F. Ensure that the meat thermometer is not touching the T bone as it may throw off the temperature.

Well Done

For well done, cook the T-bone steak for 13-15 minutes, flipping once halfway until the internal temperature of 155°F- 160°F.

There shouldn’t be red or pink inside. Let the steak rest for 5 minutes. Then, cut it against the grain.

How To Know If Your T-Bone Steak Is Done

Tender & Juicy T-Bone Steak in the Oven

Whenever I cook steak, I use a meat thermometer to know if it is done. The internal temperature depends on the degree of doneness you prefer.

For rare, the internal temperature should be 125°F, 130°F- 135°F for medium rare, and 135°F- 140°F for medium.

If you like your steak medium well, the internal temperature should be 140°F- 150°F and 155°F-160°F for well done.

Cooking T-Bone Steak in the Oven at High Temperature

You can achieve a good T-bone steak by exposing your meat to an ideal temperature of 400 degrees. When you grill steak, you expose the outer layer, and the sear will keep the inside of the steak juicy and tender.

Do not cook your T-Bone steak lower or higher than 400 degrees. If you go lower, you will not get the perfect sear; if you go higher, you might overcook your meat. I learned the hard way by over-cooking mine, so make sure to use a timer to avoid it.

Should I Cover It With Aluminum Foil?

Yes, you can cover the steak with aluminum foil. I usually cover my steak to prevent moisture from escaping. However, it depends on your preference. You can still cook the steak without aluminum foil.

“Allowing the meat to come to room temperature allows for a more even cook all the way through. If your meat is cold when it hits the pan, it can cause the muscle fibres to tense up.”

Tips When Cooking T-Bone Steak In Oven

  • Bring the steak to room temperature before cooking.
  • Cook the steaks on both sides. This ensures that the steak is evenly cooked and juicier.
  • Season with salt. Seasoning with salt brines the steak, which could produce better flavor when searing before cooking it in the oven.
  • Sear the steak before cooking it in the oven. This will give the steak a crisp brown outside.
  • Let the T-bone steak rest before cutting it.
